If you remember the days when
a computer was as big as a compact car and "Surfing" was
something you did on family vacations you may need
to brush up on your computer savvy. Welcome to 2003
where computers are everywhere and inside everything
from cell phones to cars and most importantly our children's
bedrooms. According to a study conducted by the U.S.
Census Bureau, in 2000, 54 million households had one
or more computers and nearly two thirds of all children
3 to 17 lived in a household with a computer.
So the question arises, "Are you protecting your
children from the dangers of the internet?" Those
words alone, "Dangers of the Internet" conjure
up thoughts of adult chat rooms or a questionable website
that should be forbidden. But there is great danger that
many of you may not even know about which is the danger
of unlimited access to downloadable music. IMesh, Limewire
and more popularly Kazaa are all free software programs
that give access to any type of music, movies or pictures
for free. With a few clicks of the mouse, your child
can have access to various artists who are filling their
music with lyrics that oppose all things Godly and expose
them to sexual immorality, violence, drugs and anything
you could imagine that you would not want your child
exposed to. These things exist on the internet without
even the hint of parental control.
Music is a powerful force and
most of the time is overlooked by parents today. So
take the time to not only check your kids CD player
but to check what he or she might be downloading off
the internet. Phil Driscoll has a quote, "As the Sound Goes in Your World So Goes
Your World". Let's be smart and proactive in controlling
the sound that is going on in our children's world.
